BLRR V. CITY OF BUFFALO

We sought to minimize and reduce the harm caused by the Buffalo Police. We were named plaintiffs in a lawsuit against the City and their use of vehicular checkpoints, which unconstitutionally targeted communities of color and exacerbated their financial burdens through excessive ticketing, fines and fees.

Our Progress

Budget Campaign

BLRR has been working to divest from policing and invest in communities since its inception in 2017. In the 2020-2021 fiscal year, the Buffalo Police Department received $146 million from the City of Buffalo, nearly 1/3rd The City’s overall budget. The Buffalo Police Department’s funding has increased by 57% since 2006, while no other program or department budget has increased by even 20% over the past 15 years. We continue to work toward a Buffalo where all communities have what they need to thrive and know that will be possible when we significantly decrease police related spending and increase funding for community resources.

Redefining Safety

Through training and workshop with residents of Buffalo we are re-defining what it means to feel safe in our neighborhoods, to live in safe neighborhoods, and whether or not law enforcement is included in the definition of safety while simultaneously creating spaces to imagine alternatives to policing in neighborhoods dealing with interpersonal violence.
